What Is FCL (Full Container Load)?

With FCL, you rent an entire shipping container exclusively for your cargo. The container is sealed at the point of origin and doesn't open again until it reaches its destination. Standard sizes are 20-foot and 40-foot containers.

FCL is typically the right choice when:

• Your cargo fills more than about 15 cubic metres (roughly half a 20-foot container)
• You're shipping fragile, high-value, or sensitive goods that benefit from minimal handling
• Transit time is a priority — FCL containers move more directly through the supply chain
• You want predictable, fixed pricing per container

What Is LCL (Less than Container Load)?

With LCL, your cargo shares container space with shipments from other companies. You pay only for the cubic metres or weight your goods occupy. A freight forwarder consolidates multiple LCL shipments into one container.

LCL is typically the right choice when:

• Your shipment is smaller — under 10–15 cubic metres
• You're testing a new supplier or product line and don't need a full container yet
• Cash flow matters and you want to avoid paying for empty container space
• You ship regularly in smaller volumes and want flexibility

For large volumes, FCL typically offers a lower cost per unit. For smaller shipments, LCL lets you pay only for what you use. FCL generally offers faster transit times, while LCL adds some time for consolidation and deconsolidation. FCL also means less cargo handling, reducing the risk of damage.

A Practical Example

Say you're importing 8 cubic metres of building materials from China to Toronto. An LCL shipment would likely cost significantly less than booking a full 20-foot container (which holds about 25–28 cubic metres). But if you're importing 22 cubic metres, FCL becomes the more economical and practical choice.
